Book Recommended (if you are interested in colonial literature in East Asia)

Hello all,

As you might notice, East Asia is not one of the areas that are covered in this course. As a graduate student from the East Asian Studies field, I would like to recommend a book to some of you who might be interested in Japanese colonial literature, especially Japanese colonial literature in Taiwan. This book is Under an Imperial Sun: Japanese Colonial Literature of Taiwan and the South, by Faye Yuan Kleeman (Published by University of Hawaii, 2003). OSU has one copy, and you can also get access to an online version through the OSU Library website.

Kleeman focuses on the literary and cultural representations of Taiwan in the Japanese colonial period. Both Japanese and Taiwanese authors and their works are examined. I especially like the part when she discusses the colonial language policy and the multilingual environment of Taiwan.  Chapters 4, 5, 6, and 7 are highly recommended!
